Letter from the Non-Editor

I've been studying the media for 30 years. I've watched it slide from fact to opinion, and both sides are guilty.

All I ever wanted was the information I need to make up my own mind. That's all this site is: sourced information, no opinion. If you want my opinion, I'm happy to give it to you. I doubt you do.

The day the paper stopped landing

I checked it for the sport. Mum checked it for the births and deaths. Everyone thumbed through it for their own reason. It was ours, and when it went, so did the one place a whole town looked each morning.

Back to single life, I wanted to know what was going on around me and couldn't. When I did find something that sounded good and turned up, nothing was on. I felt disconnected from my own community, and I'm not the only one.

Dr Bob Moorehead wrote it best in 1995, in a piece now wrongly credited to the Dalai Lama: we've been to the moon and back, but struggle to cross the street to meet the new neighbour. Bigger houses, smaller families. More information, less communication. Read the rest, then look up from your phone.

Regional Australia gets overlooked

Our kids have to leave for the cities. Big tech made everyone's bedroom the place to connect. I'd rather you connect at the pub, at bingo, at the footy, in a hall somewhere out in public. The whole point of this site is to get you off it and into a room with each other.

That's what putting the unity back into community means to me. One place you come back to each morning, with everything you need to know about where you live, then out the door.

Yes, I source the internet

Everything here comes from somewhere else, and every item names its source and links back to it. I'm not making money from anyone's hard work, just making it easier for the community to find. Every source gets more eyeballs, not fewer.

My background is marketing. I'm not a coder, and not a single line of this site was written by a professional one. It's me, playing with AI, seeing how far I can take it when it's used responsibly and for good.
